Grab your phone and computer and get comfy on your sofa. No, you’re not going to follow his tweets or Facebook updates. You’re going to do what’s best for your hurting heart and you’re going to delete him. Go ahead. Block or unfriend him. This way, you can’t follow what he’s doing. Do the same with his Twitter feed. Delete his phone number and all those texts from your phone.
A really good technique to use to get to know yourself and figure out how you feel is to journal. I know a lot of people roll their eyes and groan at the idea, but it can take you to really enlightening places. Who cares if it’s an incoherent jumbled mess; no one is reading it but you. Sometimes we don’t even know what we need but then we put pen to paper and something pops out and we’re like, “Whoa, I didn’t even know that’s what I needed, but that sounds amazing!” Just give it a try.
How you view yourself, how you feel about yourself and the conversation you’re having inside your head about you, is a million times more important than any outside relationship. I don’t care who this guy is and how much you love him. YOUR love for yourself trumps him. Always.
Your articles have been a big help. I (29 years old with past relationship experiences) met an almost divorced guy on dating app who lives in a city 700 miles away. I considered the dangers but it has been a while for him, he will be finally divorced in a month. We hit it off vert well, we discussed we were going fast, and we decided to continue but very slow. We mutually decided to meet also. The travel plan was for me to fly. And we booked the tickets 10 days in advance. On the day of flight, he messages me not to come. And then adds “Don’t bother replying or calling. Have good luck.” I suffer from severe anxiety and abandonment issues. So I was shocked but I still kept my cool, and tried to talk to him, figuring out what it means. He didn’t say anything until after I cancelled my flight in the evening when he succinctly says he is sorry but it is overwhelming. Now I know it’s more about him not being ready. But I also can’t stop wondering that I could have gone more slow, and done more things to make sure he doesn’t feel overwhelmed. But nevertheless he never replied anymore and it seems we are over. I am treating it as a break up. And plan to follow your suggestion of not contacting him for at least 30 days and then texting him. I have dated and been with some good men too with whom it just didn’t work. So I know the different connections and with this man I see a future. Not in a desperate way where I will act out of fear but in a way I know it’s a rare good connection. So I want it to work. When he is ready I want him to contact me. I want him to miss me, but like I said he is divorced and exactly after a month (my 30 day) is his divorce day. Now throughout our dating, he has always talked about his hardships about the whole divorce, once he was on call with me for 7 hours, on a divorce court date. He shared when he got the final divorce date too. So my question to you is that after my 30 day of no contact, it’s that final divorce court date when he will be finally free as he puts it. Should I do my first text on that date? Or wait for a few more days? I must agree I am worried to lose him. Because I am a little odd person. It’s rare for me to find a connection. I find it with him. But I remember your article about two kinds of people. I have worked hard at being the second kind, but my fears are very strong. So I am confused as to how I should approach the whole thing! Yesterday I was good in not texting him back a lot, until it was night when I sent two long messages spaced a few hours apart. My boyfriend and I got into a fight. He got arrested and charged. I understand that he’s very upset about that. I’m upset about it too. He moved some of his stuff out and staying at his mom’s house. He has depression really bad and now his even more depressed. I didn’t want him home until I knew it was safe for him to come home. We both said we are together but just taking a breather. He is so depressed that he quit his job, drinking and being neglectful. We will text great one day and talked about our issues. Everything seems great then the next day nothing. I picked him up one night he was shaking and have lost a lot of weight (it’s only been 2 weeks). We had a great night. The next more he got upset thinking that my kids didn’t want him around they are happy without him. My kids are really confused right now. I got him to eat and shower ect. Took him back to his mom ( not wanting to). We texted and I admit to my faults and mean it. He said he forgives me bit I broke him for what I said when I was angry and I said the same to him. But deep down I knew he was only mad but longer he stays away I’m starting to believe what he says. Now the next day no answer.. I know he has low self esteem issues and depression. He won’t take his name of the lease agreement and tells me he’s coming back. I’m starting to believe he’s playing games even though he’s not the type but being around his family he might have changed.. How long should I wait before shutting his phone off and car insurance. I’m not sure if he wants to be together or not. HELP PLEASE!!!
I know it’s hard, but try to stop thinking about him. Distract yourself by doing things you love! Eventually, you’ll realise that you can have plenty of fun without him, and you might realise why you broke up in the first place – and why it was probably a good thing!

Hi Ryan, I’ve been feeling anxiety lately due to my ex has been dating her ex before me lately. It hurts so bad and its killing me because I love and miss her so much. Feels like she moved so fast and doesn’t care about what we had, which is crazy to me. We had such a strong connection, yet she seems un phased with moving on. I replied yes..i couldn’t tell if she was missing me or just letting me know she was at our place to eat with someone else.. I really want my girl back soon! 🙁
