Fix Relationship Problems Or Even Avoid Altogether
Once the relationship progresses, though, especially if it results in marriage, the budget starts rebelling at all of the costs associated with “dating”. Maybe you have school loans to pay back, house payment, car payment, perhaps a family has been started.
Result: No more dating.
Maybe you even realized what was happening and instituted a scheduled “date night” each week or every other week. At first, most couples have no trouble sticking with that schedule. It’s really just a continuation of your original dating regimen.
But after a while all those other life & family issues make it easier to break the date than keep it, or maybe pay for it.
Piece by piece you might notice other aspects of the marriage crumbling too.
Date night really is a critical component of a healthy marriage or relationship, let’s find out why.
Date Night Helps You Stay Connected With Your Spouse
The “new” world of today is all about being connected. Many years ago now, billionaire co-founder of Microsoft Bill Gates stated: “People want to be online”. That was before most people really even knew what that meant. He was right.
So the business community has provided us (at great cost) with laptops, mobile phones, tablet devices, instant messages, Facebook updates, Twitter feeds and other devices and services that blur lines of reality.
Unfortunately, with all that connectivity, the human connection often gets lost to the point where people feel LESS in touch with friends and family than before. People ignore the person sitting across the room in order to connect with someone across the country (or world) that they haven’t seen in many years (and may never see again).
Many people don’t even consider it rude to answer a text in the middle of a conversation with a person physically with them!
Date night can take all of that away and leave the two of you alone to connect with one another — no matter what else is going on in your worlds. Just like watching a movie can be an escape from reality, so can date night be an escape from some of your problems.
A Committed Date Night Allows You to Spend Time Together as Lovers
Ideally, date night is about being alone together. More importantly, it’s about going out, away from the house (and the responsibilities that live in that house) and spending some quality time together as lovers.
This is not a corporate board meeting for the parents of the household to discuss Johnny’s report card or Suzy’s short skirts.
Instead, date night is a chance to hold hands, to have adult conversations (stay at home moms can really identify with that), and to actually FLIRT with one another. It’s time to be man and woman rather than MOM and DAD.
This is vitally important because it helps you remember why the two of you fell in love in the first place. People (usually) get married to secure a mate for life, not create a parenting partnership more like a business arrangement. Unfortunately, that’s what it can often transform into if you are not careful!
Date Night Forces You to Make Time for Each Other
Making time for each other, without the distractions of children and bills, is one of the most important things to saving your marriage from the oh-so-common destruction called divorce.
Putting your family first sounds admirable, but what is a family without a strong loving bond between the husband and wife? We just talked about relationship foundations the other day, and a strong marriage is a strong foundation for a family.
Your spouse needs your time just as much as each and every one of your children. Date night gives you one night, out of seven or maybe 14, to spend time together alone. It shouldn’t be too much to ask — no matter how busy your lives become.
One HUGE Key To A Successful Date Night
There is one mistake that will absolutely destroy date night and lose all positive effects on the marriage – allowing forbidden topics of discussion.
If you really want to maximize the effectiveness of date night, avoid topics involving school, work, family, and money. You’re better off discussing an upcoming romantic getaway that you’re both excited about. Date night is your opportunity to rev up the romance engine in your relationship.
I know it’s hard to come up with exciting ideas for every date night, so don’t be afraid to keep it simple sometimes. A forum I was just on this morning we were discussing the right music for a nighttime summer drive; it can be as simple as that.
